Stanford ME317: Street View Car Project 2015 The Stanford ME317 Team was assigned a task to improve the design of the interior of the Street View Car for the next generation of vehicles. The Goal Statement (2015) To improve Street View Car operation safety and driver experience by reducing driver distraction and improving workflow using simpler and smarter input interfaces. To improve crash safety record as measured by the reduction in damages due to crashes to be less than current levels (2015). To simplify assembly and maintenance of the interface hardware in the Street View cars as measured by the time and skill required to do (to take less than a day to assemble) and to allow a non-skilled driver to fix most of the common problems. Summary
The Stanford ME317 Team reviewed the display & input device of Street View Car and interviewed drivers to get feedback. The Team then designed and created several initial prototypes. We tested the feasibility of certain display locations and of head-up displays in a vehicle simulator. Afterwards, we tested the mock-up system and prototype in the car with Street View Car drivers. We then presented our insights, proposed system and prototype in the last class of ME317 at Stanford. (The Team's class presentation was open to the public.) |
